Guy Muntwyler

Fom “off-campus” student to independent architect in the town

He had no choice but to buy an old house in the town and renovate it: this is where Guy Muntwyler has his architecture studio and his home upstairs. Raised in Zurich, he studied at the Academy of Architecture. After some experiences in Switzerland and abroad, he returned to settle in the place where he had left a piece of his heart as a student who loved conviviality and nature.

What does Mendrisio mean to you?

Mendrisio is the place where I found a balance between work and private life. The sun, the proximity to Monte Generoso and the lake, the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the landscape, being close to the liveliness of Como, the food and wine, and, last but not least, the services: these are crucial aspects for me that determine my quality of life.

Is there a memory or thought that makes you smile?

It makes me smile that, even in periods of intense work, it is always possible to take a break here, maybe pop out into the streets of the town for a coffee. Country life has this relaxed pace that lets you live simply, greet people on the street, and stop for a chat: it’s something I really like, there is a kind of harmony between people that you don’t often find in larger cities.

Why choose Mendrisio for your architecture studio?

I chose Mendrisio mainly for its strategic location. From a professional point of view, Mendrisio facilitates networking with other tradespeople, such as electricians and plumbers, thanks to its community of local professionals. Being able to get to know each other personally and get together even outside work gives an extra boost to collaborations, simplifying relationships and making them even more enjoyable.

"The lake, nature, proximity to Italy, accessibility of services, and ease of travel create a mix of elements that make the place unique."
